Drone roof survey in The Wrythe
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. If you are worried about hidden gutters full of leaves and vegetation in valleys and gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Every address in The Wrythe is checked before any drone flight, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.
After the visit, you get a report with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What we do, step by step
You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, like stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll take it from there. A typical survey takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a London area like The Wrythe, the main things to sort out are parking and access: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at whatever is safely visible from ground level, windows, the loft and, where it’s safe, the roof itself.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Advice
What happens if roof problems are left?
Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller. Many older London roofs have only old felt under the slates, or no underlay at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Common questions in The Wrythe
Is my home in The Wrythe listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is drone flying allowed in The Wrythe?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.
How quickly is the report sent?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, let us know when booking.
Can you survey in bad weather?
Light rain is normally fine; heavy rain and wind are different. In strong wind or heavy rain, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, and we’d agree another day.
How long is the visit?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take between one and two hours on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. The report is sent afterwards by email.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
What does a roof survey cost?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT.
Different roofs, different checks
Steep slate and tile slopes
Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. The drone sees them without touching them.
Ridges and hips
The ridge takes wind from both sides. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.

What a drone roof survey looks like in The Wrythe
We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. With Nonsuch Mansion about 2.9 miles west, The Wrythe sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Parking in The Wrythe, as in most of London, takes a little planning: let us know about parking bays, permits or a driveway when booking. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Victor Seymour Infants' School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. Take an older house close to Bishop Andrewes Church: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Useful tips for The Wrythe property owners
Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
- Let us know the exact address when booking
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
Keep the photos with your property records. They give you something to compare against later.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
