Gutter survey in Bidden, Hampshire
Find out the condition of the gutter at your property in Bidden. Visits run on weekdays and weekends, in the daytime.
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Soffits marked by water
What you can safely check yourself
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Bidden
Gutters are normally fixed to fascia boards, so we look at the fascias and soffits too. Long-term overflowing can soften and rot timber boards and stain the soffits below. On buildings from before 2000, some soffits and rainwater goods may be asbestos cement. We do not carry out asbestos testing, but we flag anything that could contain it. If you’ve noticed sagging gutters and loose brackets and blocked outlets and hoppers, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on fascias and soffits, parapet and box gutters and downpipes alike.
In a village or hamlet like Bidden, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Tips from our surveys
You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
- Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
- Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.
Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. Left alone, they normally grow, and the water they spill can damage walls and timber.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Bidden
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.
Take a building like Robert May's School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. Landlords with a home close to Hook station may find that a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

What we look for on each type of roof
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Metal gutters can suffer at joints and where different metals meet. Any leaks or corrosion we spot go in the report.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Plastic can become brittle with age and crack. We check the joints, brackets and falls.

How it works
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photos, sent to you by email. On timing, most surveys take an hour or two for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. Older roofs in small places like Bidden can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
- Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Bidden
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Bidden?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Can a landlord with a rental near Hook station book a roof survey?
Yes, letting agents and landlords book with us as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details, including who will give access on the day.
How do I book a survey in Bidden?
Simply call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years.
What happens after the survey?
We email you the written report with photos and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
When you need someone else
It’s a careful look at the gutter, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
- Hidden sections we cannot view safely
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.
