Chigwell homes and their roofs
Historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 2.9 miles south, show how far back building in the area around Chigwell goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
For landlords with property near Chingford station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. Homes near green spaces like Chigwell Row Wood can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn. Take an older house close to St Winifred: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Chigwell
Owners get in touch after seeing an overflow, finding damp or planning ahead for winter. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. Whoever books, we inspect and report in the same way, with photos and written recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. Common reasons to book are joints that drip after rain and gutters overflowing in heavy rain, on downpipes, outlets and hoppers and fascias and soffits.
Around Chigwell, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes often need the most attention. The fixings under an older roof frequently fail before good slates or tiles do.
The report records the gutter as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Can I check my roof myself?
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
- Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
You receive a written report with photos and clear written recommendations. You can pass it to whoever you choose to do the work so they can see exactly what’s needed.
Watch your gutters from ground level or a window during heavy rain. Water spilling over the edge or out of a joint is a sign that something needs attention before damage builds up.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Chigwell
It’s easy to put damp down to the wrong cause. If a leaking gutter or downpipe is the source, other work on the wall will not stop it. Checking the gutters first helps you spend in the right place. In an older home around Chigwell, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, and that’s a much bigger job than the original defect.
Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

FAQs for Chigwell
Will you come out to Chigwell?
Yes, Chigwell is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Chingford station?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details.
How quickly is the report sent?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?
Leaking gutters and downpipes are a common cause of damp walls, and we check for exactly that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we will say so, based on what we can see.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No, we don’t carry out CCTV drain surveys. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and flags signs of a drain problem.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What we do, step by step
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Homes around Chigwell often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Mention any side of the property we can’t get to. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.
- We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Before the survey
