Gutter survey in Churt

Most gutters hang from the fascia boards at the eaves, so fascias and soffits are part of the survey. Water that overflows for long enough can rot timber fascias and stain the soffits below. Older buildings, from before 2000, can have asbestos cement soffits, gutters or downpipes. We don’t carry out asbestos testing, but we flag anything that could contain it. If you’ve noticed water spilling over the gutter edge and soffits marked by water, we can find out what’s behind it.

In a small place like Churt, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.

What you get is a clear record of the gutter on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

How we price gutter surveys

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Booking your survey

If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:

  • The property’s address and postcode
  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Any deadline, like an exchange date
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one

We survey roofs seven days a week. To find a date that works for you, call 07833 053749 or email us.

What happens on the day

Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Somewhere like Churt needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and vantage points.
  3. Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
  4. The roof space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
  5. You get a report with photographs and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

How to book

Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form whenever suits you.

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Blockages deep inside downpipes
  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards

Local roofs in Churt

There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask. Older houses across Surrey frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like St John's CofE Aided Infant School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. Take an older house close to St John the Evangelist: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. If you let a flat or house near Haslemere station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

Churt: your questions answered

Is Churt within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

I let a flat near Haslemere station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, that is a common request. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.

Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?

No, that is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. On buildings from before 2000, we flag materials that could contain it so you can arrange that check.

Do you use drones?

Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

Does the season matter for a gutter survey?

There’s no wrong time. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it is best not to wait, because the walls take the water.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.

Why get it checked now?

Small gutter faults rarely fix themselves. Each heavy rain puts more water where it shouldn’t be, on walls, timber and sometimes inside. A survey now tells you what needs doing and how urgent it is. Outbuildings and barns around Churt are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.
