Gutter survey in Fulwell
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. Photos show each problem clearly. It’s an easy job to put off, but they rarely get better. If you’re worried about sagging gutters and loose brackets and cracked or loose downpipes, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces are found right across London, often with slate roofs, chimney stacks shared with neighbours and gutters hidden behind parapets. Good slates can last over a hundred years, yet the nails often give out first and let slates slip. In Fulwell, as across London, that’s why a roof needs a close look rather than a glance from the street. Shared chimney stacks and the lead around them are just as important to check.
It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Tips from our surveys
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. It is sent to you by email as soon as it’s ready.
Hidden gutters need clearing too. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.

FAQs for Fulwell
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Fulwell?
London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway when booking. The visit is then planned around what’s available.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Fulwell?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Can the survey be at a weekend?
Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Are you insured?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
How quickly is the report sent?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Does someone need to be in?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it’s best not to wait as overflowing water can damage walls.
The survey, step by step
Photos are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take about one to two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. In a London area like Fulwell, the main things to sort out are parking and access: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at whatever is safely visible from ground level, windows, the loft and, where it is safe, the roof itself.
- First, you tell us what you’ve seen, like overflows or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
- We look in the loft space, where there is safe access, for signs of water getting in.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Keep pets in another room
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building

Advice
How the survey changes by roof type
Fascias and soffits
Most gutters are fixed to the fascia, so a rotten fascia can let the gutter drop. Damaged or stained boards are recorded.
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
Some older roofs have a central valley running to the back and if it blocks, water can come indoors. We check it where it is safe to see.
What this survey cannot tell you
It’s a careful look at the gutter, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
- Pipes below ground level

Roof types and parts we check
- Valley gutters
- Fascias and soffits
- Eaves gutters
- Downpipes
- Parapet and box gutters
- Outlets and hoppers
Can I check my roof myself?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Fulwell homes and their roofs
Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. With Strawberry Hill House about 0.6 miles north-east, Fulwell sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Treaty Centre, knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies. Trees in and around Carlisle Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. For an older house near a landmark like St Michael's, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
