Strawberry Hill: your questions answered
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Strawberry Hill?
London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway when booking. The visit is then planned around what’s available.
Is my home in Strawberry Hill listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
What’s in the report?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photos. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.
How much time does the visit need?
Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.
What do I do with the report?
You’ll get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Do you cover Strawberry Hill for gutter surveys?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, Strawberry Hill included.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Gutter survey in Strawberry Hill
Eaves gutters at the front of a building are easy to spot but lots of gutters are tucked away. Valley gutters between slopes, gutters behind parapet walls and box or secret gutters can send water indoors when they overflow. We inspect them as far as it’s safe to see them using vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe. Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. Common reasons to book are water spilling over the gutter edge and fascia boards damaged by overflowing water, across outlets and hoppers, parapet and box gutters and eaves gutters.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces are found right across London, often with slate roofs, chimney stacks shared with neighbours and gutters hidden behind parapets. Slates can last a century or more, but the nails holding them corrode, and slates slip. In Strawberry Hill, as across London, that is why a roof needs a proper look rather than a glance from the street. Lead flashings and shared chimney stacks on these houses need a close look too.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

How the survey works
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, tell us when you book.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Advice
Can I check my roof myself?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Gutter surveys around Strawberry Hill
In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. With Strawberry Hill House about 0.1 miles south-west, Strawberry Hill sits in an area with a long building history. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you look after a building such as Kneller Hall Senior School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. For an older house near a landmark such as Holy Trinity Church, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. Trees in and around Marble Hill Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters.

Why get it checked now?
A dripping joint or sagging bracket won’t get better on its own. Every downpour adds to the damage on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. A survey now tells you what needs doing and how urgent it is. London’s older roofs frequently have bitumen felt underlay or none at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.
There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Before and after the survey
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
- Look out for overflows when it pours
If we think the problem lies underground, we’ll say so, so you can arrange a drain survey. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.
Deal with drips, sags and loose downpipes early. Left alone, they usually grow, and the water they spill can damage walls and timber.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant.
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
What affects the cost of gutter surveys
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- The shape of the roof and its details
- House, block, shop or office
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Booking your survey
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- What’s prompted the survey
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just phone 07833 053749 or email us when you’re ready.
