Questions from Hillingdon
Is parking a problem for a survey in Hillingdon?
Parking in Hillingdon, as in most of London, takes a little planning: a visitor permit or a bay close to the door helps a lot, so mention what’s available when you book.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hillingdon?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will you look at parapet and box gutters as well?
Yes. Hidden gutters are a common cause of leaks inside so we pay close attention to them. Parts of them may not be visible, and we’ll note that in the report.
When is the best time for a gutter survey?
Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it’s best not to wait, because the walls take the water.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos testing. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
How many surveys have you done?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
About our gutter survey in Hillingdon
Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t, often down the brickwork or into the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. You get a written report with photographs. We survey valley gutters, downpipes and fascias and soffits, and people most often book us about gutters that have fallen out of line and valley or box gutters that overflow inside.
London has Victorian and Edwardian terraces in almost every borough, often with slate roofs, chimney stacks shared with neighbours and gutters hidden behind parapets. Slates can last a century or more, but the nails holding them corrode, and slates slip. In Hillingdon, as across London, that is why a roof needs a close look rather than a glance from the street. Lead flashings and shared chimney stacks on these houses need a close look too.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Gutter surveys around Hillingdon
In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. If your home in Hillingdon is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. The wider area around Hillingdon has a long history of building, with Ickenham Hall about 1.8 miles north. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.
If you look after a building like Abbotsfield School for Boys, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. Landlords with a home close to West Drayton station may find that the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St John, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

What happens on the day
We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take an hour or two for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a London area like Hillingdon, the main things to sort out are parking and access: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at what can be seen safely from ground level, windows, the loft and, where it’s safe, the roof itself.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before the survey
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent

A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Why act early in Hillingdon
A dripping joint or sagging bracket will not get better on its own. Every downpour adds to the damage on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. Getting it surveyed now shows what needs attention first. Any roof job in Hillingdon means planning around parking, neighbours and access. Knowing what’s needed early gives you time to plan it calmly.
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

What you can safely check yourself
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Practical tips
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters
Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.
Have your gutters cleared at least once a year or more often near trees. The best time is usually after the leaves have dropped. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
When you need someone else
Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
- Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely
If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.
