The survey, step by step

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. From the street, a London terrace normally shows only its front slope or parapet, so in Wimbledon we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, let us know who can let us into the shared parts.

  1. You pick a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends.
  3. The investigation works from the stain back to the roof.
  4. Moisture detection and thermal imaging are used where your package includes them and they help.
  5. The report explains the likely entry point and what needs attention.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in

How a roof leak investigation works in Wimbledon

Water is good at hiding where it gets in. It can run along a rafter, a batten or the underlay before it drips, so the stain on your ceiling is seldom right under the hole. Our leak investigation traces it back, one likely route at a time. A repair aimed only at the stain can miss the cause entirely. Finding the route first lets the repair go where it is needed. If you’ve noticed drips in the loft during heavy rain and leaks that appear only in driving rain, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on lead flashings, slate and tile slopes and chimney stacks alike.

In converted houses and blocks across London, water from a roof can run a long way before it shows on a ceiling. That makes the source hard to pin down, and finding it matters for whoever has to deal with it. In Wimbledon, we inspect what we can reach safely and are given access to. It’s useful to know when the water appears and in what weather.

What you get is a clear record of the leaking roof on the day we saw it. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Useful tips for Wimbledon property owners

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Record whether it leaks in every downpour or only some
  • Protect furniture and flooring under the leak
  • Check whether pipes or tanks run near the stain
  • Have an electrician check any wet fittings

The report gives whoever carries out the work a clear starting point. They’ll see exactly where the problem is, rather than at the stain.

Have flashings and flat roofs looked at every few years. They’re where most leaks start, and catching wear early keeps water out.

Your questions about roof leak investigations in Wimbledon

Is Wimbledon in the area you cover?

Yes, Wimbledon is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Wimbledon as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Can parking be tricky for a visit in Wimbledon?

It depends on the street. If Wimbledon has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer.

How do I book a survey in Wimbledon?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or send us an email. Tell us the address and a little about the roof. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends.

When does the report arrive?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.

What’s in the survey report?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.

How long will you be at the property?

On site, it usually takes roughly 1–2 hours, more where the leak is intermittent or the roof is large. Report times depend on the package.

Do I need to be at home?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you as you book.

Different roofs, different checks

Slate and tile slopes

A gap in the coverings exposes the underlay. Ageing felt eventually lets water through.

Parapet and box gutters

Parapet and box gutters sit behind walls or inside the roof. A blocked outlet sends water over the lining and into the building.

When you need someone else

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Water from pipes, tanks or heating systems
  • Whether rotten timbers meet design loads
  • Leaks that only appear in weather we can’t recreate

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Do you need a roof leak investigation in Wimbledon?

Flat roofs fail with age and wear. A felt roof often lasts around 15 to 20 years, and as it ages it splits, blisters and opens at the laps. Upstands and outlets are common weak points.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Damp ceilings under a flat roof
  • Damp walls below an overflowing gutter
  • Brown rings on upstairs ceilings
  • Drips from nail tips in a cold loft

For businesses in and around places such as Southside Wandsworth, a quick answer on where water is coming in keeps a business running.

What to check before booking

  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof

What a good roof survey covers

Wimbledon roofs and the weather

Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. If your home in Wimbledon is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. Southside House, about 1.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Wimbledon. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.

Living close to Cannizaro Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. Landlords with a home close to Wimbledon station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.
