Thermal imaging roof survey in Grayshott, Surrey

  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Leaks that are hard to trace

Thermal roof surveys in Grayshott

Roof by roof

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Damp at junctions can be hard to see by eye. We combine a close visual check with the thermal images.

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.

Thermal roof survey in Grayshott

Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We survey insulated roof spaces, pitched roof slopes and loft conversions, and people most frequently book us about wet areas near outlets and upstands and cold spots on ceilings under the roof.

Around Grayshott, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Commercial roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Insulated roof spaces

What we do, step by step

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. As for time on site, it usually takes about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there frequently is around Grayshott, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

How to prepare

  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Tell us about parking before the day

Booking a survey

If you are buying, it is useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just ring 07833 053749 or email us when you’re ready.

Why get it checked now?

Once insulation under a membrane is wet, it tends to stay wet. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. On a bungalow or cottage around Grayshott, the roof sits close to the rooms below, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.

Before and after the survey

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
  • Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.

After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry, when the conditions are suitable.

Drones, thermal imaging and Grayshott roofs

If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council.

If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Luke, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Take a building like Grayshott Church of England Controlled Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Grayshott: your questions answered

Is Grayshott in the area you cover?

Yes, Grayshott is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

How do I find out if my home in Grayshott is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Just say which days work for you.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where applicable and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • How big the roof is

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.

What we need to know

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to let us know:

  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • What’s prompted the survey

To book a survey, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. You will know the price before anything is booked.
