Thermal Roof Survey in Hove
We take a careful look at the roof at your property in Hove, and put it all in a report with photographs.
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Water that travels before it shows
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
Can I check my roof myself?
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey.
About our thermal roof survey in Hove
We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. With a Premium Survey, the report reaches you the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. A follow-up 12 months later is included too. We survey pitched roof slopes, insulated roof spaces and commercial roofs, and people most often book us about damp around roof outlets and upstands and patches of heat loss across the roof.
In older houses around Hove, loft insulation can be thin, patchy or missing in places. Thermal imaging can show where heat escapes, and it can also point to damp patches. It shows temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter, while drone photos show the outside of the same roof. Results depend on conditions, so the timing of the visit matters.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What happens on the day
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Parking in a town like Hove is typically simple, but let us know if there’s a driveway or any restrictions. We check the roof from the ground and from windows, then from the loft where there is safe access, and from the roof itself where it is safe.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We check the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent

When to book a survey in Hove
Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated roof areas can show up on the camera, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.
Common reasons to book include:
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Stains that keep coming back
Anyone responsible for a site like St Andrew's CofE (Aided) Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Questions to ask before you book
- Which limits apply to the survey
- What experience they bring
- What insurance they carry
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
What else we do in Hove
Flying and imaging in Hove
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Hove. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
For hotels and guest houses around Hove, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition. The streets around a church such as Holy Trinity Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
Hove is about 2 miles west of Brighton, in Brighton and Hove. Hove is one of many places we visit across Brighton and Hove, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. Hove is one of the towns and villages in Brighton and Hove where we work for thermal roof surveys.

Hove questions
Is there anything to prepare before you come to Hove?
The main thing is access, inside and out, plus somewhere to park in Hove. Tell us about known leaks or past repairs as well.
Is my home in Hove listed or in a conservation area?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
The camera does not see water itself. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, and moisture readings are used to check it.
What’s in the report?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, and ends with what we recommend. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Check the loft can be reached safely
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
Once we have been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day.
Check loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Insulation is frequently moved when people work in the roof space.
Different roofs, different checks
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
On felt and asphalt flat roofs, wet insulation can show as a temperature difference across the surface. Moisture readings are used to check them.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.
What this survey cannot tell you
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- An energy rating for the building
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.
