How a thermal roof survey works in Watchmoor

Thermal imaging is useful when a damp patch has no clear cause. Leaks often run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. The images are used alongside a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings don’t rely on the camera alone. If you’ve noticed areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Even in a smaller place like Watchmoor, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Watchmoor

Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, ideally before any re-roofing is planned. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

If you live in an older home near St Mary's Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Thermal roof surveys in GU15, GU17 and GU14 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Local streets include Lea Road, Wood Road and Vale Road, all of which we cover. How the survey changes by roof type

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.

The survey, step by step

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Watchmoor, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

How to prepare

  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Getting a price

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Advice

What we are asked to look at in Watchmoor

After a repair, some owners want to know whether the roof has dried out. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain, given suitable conditions on the day.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
  • Water getting in at parapets and stacks
  • Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
  • Patches of heat loss across the roof

For site and facilities teams at buildings like South Camberley Primary and Nursery School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • What the survey will not cover
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • What happens after the report arrives

What’s in a roof survey

Tips from our surveys

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Talk to us about the weather when booking
  • Check the loft can be reached safely
  • Do not switch the heating off ahead of the visit
  • Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself

After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day.

Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Why get it checked now?

If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you spend. Homes in smaller places like Watchmoor can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Each storm lifts it a little further.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You’ll know the price for your roof before booking.

Watchmoor questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Watchmoor?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you cover smaller places like Watchmoor?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when you book.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

How do I book a survey in Watchmoor?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or send us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. Surveys run seven days a week.

Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?

It often helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone cannot prove a leak.

What will the report tell me?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, and ends with what we recommend. The most urgent items are made clear.
