Common questions in Hackney

Are there drone restrictions around Hackney?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hackney?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found.

How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Hackney?

Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.

How long is the visit?

Expect it to take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. You will then get the report by email.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.

About our drone roof survey in Hackney

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone isn’t the right tool, we will say so. We are often asked to look into lifted or split lead flashings and chimney tops in poor condition, on chimney stacks, fragile roofs and tall and steep roofs.

Flying in London takes more checking than most places: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in Hackney, the address is checked against all of them, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Practical tips

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Let us know the exact address when booking
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Let us know what you want to see

If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. The photos show the location and extent of every problem.

After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone can show exactly what has moved.

Honest limits

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

How it works

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos. On timing, it usually takes about one to two hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. Surveys in Hackney can be booked for any day of the week. It helps if you can point us to a visitor permit or a nearby bay. A back bedroom window can be the best vantage point for a rear addition, so we may ask to use one.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent

What we look for on each type of roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates frequently point to corroded nails. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Hackney

London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

For hotels and guest houses around Hackney, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest. For businesses in and around places such as Hackney Walk, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. Controlled parking zones are common in London, so mention any permit rules for Hackney, along with any off-street space.

Hackney is about 4 miles north-east of London, in Greater London. Whether the building in Hackney is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Our area takes in places right across Greater London, from the larger towns to small villages.

We survey roofs across E9, E8, E3 and E5 for drone roof surveys. Whether your property is on Homerton High Street, Primrose Square and St John's Church Road or anywhere close by, we can survey it. Hackney is on the A107 and B113, so it’s easy for us to get to. Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Landlords, agents and building managers in Hackney and across Greater London can book any of our surveys. To discuss a property or a block, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By then, timbers, ceilings and insulation may be wet. Looking from above picks up the early signs. Any roof job in Hackney means planning around parking, neighbours and access. Knowing what’s needed early gives you time to plan it calmly.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.
