Drone roof survey in Surrey Canal

Drones need reasonable weather. We don’t fly in high wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we will agree another day. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. Typical surveys look at blocked valleys and parapet gutters and flat roofs on upper floors that hold water, on chimney stacks, fragile roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

Flying in London takes more checking than most places: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Before a drone goes up in Surrey Canal, the address is checked against all of them, and permission is never taken for granted.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Drone roof surveys in Surrey Canal: local notes

The flight restriction zone around London City Airport comes within about 2 miles of Surrey Canal. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. About 2.1 miles east lies Queen's House, a reminder of how long the area around Surrey Canal has been built on. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Take a building like Ilderton Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St Katharine with St Bartholomew, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Surrey Canal is about 1 mile north-west of New Cross, in Greater London. Whether the building in Surrey Canal is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. We cover towns and villages across Greater London, large and small.

Surveys in SE16, SE15 and SE14 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether your property is on Pump Lane, Bush Road and Water Lane or a nearby road, we can survey it. Being close to the A200 and A2208, Surrey Canal is easy for us to reach for drone roof surveys. Close by, we survey roofs in South Bermondsey (1 mile west), Surrey Quays (1 mile north-east), Rotherhithe (1 mile north), Peckham (1 mile south-west) and Deptford (1 mile south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover City of Westminster (5 miles north-west), Marylebone (5 miles north-west), Kensington (7 miles west), St Pancras (4 miles north-west), Shoreditch (3 miles north-west) and Walthamstow (7 miles north).

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. Each defect is photographed for the report.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan.

What we do, step by step

The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It typically takes between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, tell us as you book.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Advice

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Surrey Canal

After storms, owners want to know what has moved. It is hard to tell from below what has shifted. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Flashings that have come away
  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below

As a London address, Surrey Canal can be tricky for parking: let us know about parking bays, permits or a driveway as you book, as a space near the door cannot be promised.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • How soon the report will arrive

What’s in a roof survey

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs

Why it is worth a survey now in Surrey Canal

Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. They show the location and extent of each defect, which helps when you ask for quotes. In a London terrace or conversion, a roof defect rarely stays your problem alone: failed flashings and blocked valley gutters can send water into more than one home. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.

There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Why us?

  • Clear package prices, inc. VAT
  • Professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • A sub-250g drone, flown with a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Independent findings on the roof’s condition

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Surrey Canal

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Surrey Canal?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Surrey Canal?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Surrey Canal is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London City Airport. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when booking.

How long will you be at the property?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take an hour or two on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.

Does the weather affect the survey?

Light rain doesn’t typically stop a survey, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we’ll agree a new date if the weather isn’t suitable.
