About our gutter survey in Church Whitfield
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Church Whitfield and right across London and South East England. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view from ground level, windows, the loft space and the roof where it’s safe. A visit normally takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Afterwards, you get a written report with photos and recommendations. We survey eaves gutters, downpipes and outlets and hoppers, and common reasons people get in touch are blocked outlets and hoppers and overflowing eaves gutters.
Somewhere as small as Church Whitfield, homes are frequently older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on whatever is safely visible, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it’s usually the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
After the visit, you get a report with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Common questions in Church Whitfield
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Church Whitfield, take more of a battering?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
Do you cover smaller places like Church Whitfield?
Yes, Church Whitfield is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
How soon will I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No. We do not carry out asbestos testing. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.
What does the report include?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photographs throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.
Will you check the loft?
Where it is relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Tips from our surveys
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
Report times depend on the package you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It is sent to you by email as soon as it’s ready.
Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. They tend to get worse, and the water they spill can damage walls and timber.
What we do, step by step
When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Church Whitfield often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent

Advice
What we look for on each type of roof
Box and secret gutters
Box gutters sit within the roof or behind a wall, so overflows can end up inside. We check them where they can safely be seen.
Cast iron gutters
Cast iron tends to fail at the joints and fixings. Cracks, rust and leaks are recorded as far as we can see them.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Honest limits
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

What a gutter survey looks like in Church Whitfield
The coast is about 3 miles or less from Church Whitfield, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Historic houses like Walmer Castle, about 4.9 miles north-east, show how far back building in the area around Church Whitfield goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.
Trees in and around Old Park Hill shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters. Anyone responsible for a site like Whitfield Aspen School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the visit with that in mind.
