Gutter survey in New Zealand, Buckinghamshire
A survey of gutters, valleys, outlets and downpipes across New Zealand, using drones and thermal imaging where it applies. Call or email for a price.
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
What you can safely check yourself
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Gutter survey in New Zealand
Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t, often down the brickwork or into the building. Our survey looks at the whole rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. We survey parapet and box gutters, outlets and hoppers and valley gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are brackets that have dropped or snapped and gutters full of debris and silt.
Somewhere as small as New Zealand, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on whatever is safely visible, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters, which helps when budgeting.
Common roof problems in New Zealand
Sometimes a gutter struggles with the area of roof draining into it. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter, and a heavy downpour shows up the problem.
People usually book a survey after spotting something like this:
- Soffits marked by water
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
- Leaking or loose downpipes
If you live in an older home near St Peter's, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Are they insured for the work?
- What experience they bring
- Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
New Zealand homes and their roofs
England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask. Some villages in Buckinghamshire still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
If you run a business near Friars Square, a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak. If you own a rental within reach of Aylesbury station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

The survey, step by step
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Cottages and farmhouses around New Zealand often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Preparing for the visit
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

FAQs for New Zealand
Does a conservation area affect roof work in New Zealand?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Will you come out to New Zealand?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
You can book at any time of year. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan though problems frequently show up after heavy rain.
How long does a gutter survey take?
For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.
What does the report include?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. The most urgent items are made clear.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No. Our gutter survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.
Practical tips
Small things make a difference. Our tips:
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
- Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters
Landlords and managing agents can keep the report with the building’s records and use it to plan upkeep. Photos make it easier to explain the work to owners, tenants or contractors.
Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. Left alone, they typically grow and spilled water harms brickwork and woodwork.
