About our gutter survey in Stroud Green
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Stroud Green and right across London and South East England. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, from ground level, from windows and from the loft space. Time on site normally takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Afterwards, you get a written report with photos and recommendations. If you’ve noticed blocked outlets and hoppers and leaves and moss blocking gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, on eaves gutters, parapet and box gutters and downpipes alike.
Many London terraces have a butterfly roof, with two slopes meeting in a central valley gutter that drains to the rear. From the street you see only a parapet wall, so blocked outlets and split linings go unnoticed until water comes through a ceiling. For a house in Stroud Green with this kind of roof, the hidden gutter is one of the first things to check.
Where we cannot see part of the gutter, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

Different roofs, different checks
Cast iron gutters
Lots of period homes still have cast iron rainwater goods. They last well when painted, but rust where the paint fails.
Box and secret gutters
A box gutter is built into the roof, frequently behind a parapet and when it overflows, water can get indoors. We check them where they can be seen safely.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Stroud Green
Welsh slate on Victorian and Edwardian terraces is a familiar sight across inner London. From the street you may see only a parapet, with a butterfly roof and a valley gutter behind it draining to the back. Lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are typical of these houses, if yours is one of them. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. About 1.9 miles west lies Witanhurst, a reminder of how long the area around Stroud Green has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you let a flat or house near Harringay station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. For businesses in and around places such as The Mall Wood Green, a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Holy Trinity, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

Honest limits
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

Stroud Green questions
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Stroud Green?
It rarely stops a survey, but it is worth planning. Let us know what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.
Is my home in Stroud Green listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
What happens next?
The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach.
What will the report tell me?
Written findings with photos, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations, by urgency where it matters. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No. Our gutter survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.
Will you check the loft?
If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.
DIY checks: what’s safe
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
Useful tips for Stroud Green property owners
Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Make sure downpipe clips are holding
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so you can arrange a drain survey. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.
Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. They tend to get worse and spilled water harms brickwork and woodwork.
How the survey works
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so in Stroud Green we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. Shared stairs or a basement flat? Let us know who holds the keys.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
