Thermal imaging roof survey in Tufnell Park, Greater London
Thermal roof surveys across Tufnell Park, backed by more than 20 years’ experience. Every survey ends with a written report and photographs.
- Cold areas below the roof
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Heat escaping through the roof
How a thermal roof survey works in Tufnell Park
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. The camera doesn’t see water itself, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. If you are worried about possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering and damp around chimneys and parapets, we can find out what’s behind it.
In London’s terraces and conversions, roofs are packed close together, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. Images are taken to show the roof we’re surveying, with care for neighbours’ privacy. Tell us about the building and access when you book. The extra view helps most on steep slopes, tall stacks and rear additions.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Practical tips
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- File the images with your roof records
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.
For landlords and managing agents
Landlords and agents in Tufnell Park book surveys as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.

What happens on the day
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take an hour or two for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a London area like Tufnell Park, the main things to sort out are parking and access: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at whatever is safely visible from ground level, windows, the loft and, where it is safe, the roof itself.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
How to prepare
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Leave a clear route to the loft

Tufnell Park: your questions answered
Is parking a problem for a survey in Tufnell Park?
Normally it is manageable with a little notice. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.
Are there drone restrictions around Tufnell Park?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.
What happens after the survey?
You will get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
What’s the best way to book?
To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
When does the report arrive?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.
Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you as you book.
DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- House, block, shop or office
- The size of the roof
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
What we need to know
To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- When you need the report by

What this survey can’t tell you
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- An energy rating for the building
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Proving moisture from the images alone

Airspace, weather and Tufnell Park roofs
Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have Welsh slate roofs. From the street you may see only a parapet, with a butterfly roof and a valley gutter behind it draining to the back. In a house like that, shared stacks, party-wall upstands and lead flashings all need looking at as far as they can be seen. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Benet and All Saints, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. Historic houses like Witanhurst, about 1.2 miles north-west, show how far back building around Tufnell Park goes. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near O2 Centre, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.
