What happens on the day

You don’t need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll take it from there. The survey itself takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is frequently on a shared landing. If that applies to your building, it is useful to agree access with the neighbours or the managing agent first. Otherwise, the visit in Poplar runs like any other.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

How a drone roof survey works in Poplar

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are loose ridge and hip tiles and standing water on a flat roof.

London roofs sit shoulder to shoulder in terraces and blocks, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. We take care to focus on the roof we have been asked to look at. Tell us about the building and access as you book. The extra view helps most on steep slopes, tall stacks and rear additions.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Poplar?

Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.

It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Plant growth and moss on the roof
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles
  • Flashings that have come away
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds

Take an older house close to St Peter's Church: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What to check before booking

  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • Their insurance cover
  • What they will not be able to tell you

What a roof survey includes

Before and after the survey

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Make sure the loft can be reached
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. You can ask about anything that isn’t clear.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it is something only an inside check will show. Make sure insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

Roof by roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

Widespread slipping on slate typically means nail fatigue. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.

Valleys and parapet gutters

When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. We check outlets and photograph any build-up.

Common questions in Poplar

Is parking a problem for a survey in Poplar?

Normally it’s manageable with a little notice. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Poplar?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. The flight restriction zone around London City Airport covers Poplar, or comes right up to its edge. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it’s given. The restricted area over the Isle of Dogs, where drone flights need permission from NATS, is about 1 mile from Poplar. We check whether the address falls inside it, and if it does we apply for permission, which is not always given. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Where it is relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

How do I book a survey in Poplar?

It is easiest to ring 07833 053749 or email us. Tell us the address and a little about the roof. We survey seven days a week.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Checking the roof from the ground

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.

What a drone roof survey does not cover

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Flights in strong wind or heavy rain

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs

Drones, thermal imaging and Poplar roofs

The flight restriction zone around London City Airport covers Poplar, or comes right up to its edge. We ask the airport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it’s given. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. Anyone responsible for a site like Tower Hamlets College will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
