Drone roof survey in West Hampstead
Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. We keep the camera on the roof we’re surveying, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. Common reasons to book are cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and cracked mortar along the ridge, across large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and fragile roofs.
In London’s terraces and conversions, roofs are packed close together, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. We take care to focus on the roof we’ve been asked to look at. Tell us about the building and access as you book. The extra view helps most on steep slopes, tall stacks and rear additions.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Questions from West Hampstead
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in West Hampstead?
Parking in West Hampstead, as in most of London, takes a little planning: a visitor permit or a nearby bay makes the day run more smoothly, so mention what’s available as you book.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in West Hampstead?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Does the drone show the underside of the roof?
No. The drone photographs the outer surfaces, but it cannot see under the coverings. Where there is safe access, we check the loft space from inside.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days when you book.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before you book, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. To get a price, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Roof by roof
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Outlets, edges and roof plant are common problem areas. We photograph them closely.
Large commercial roofs
Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.
Tips from our surveys
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Make sure there is room outside for the drone to take off
- Let us know the exact address when booking
- Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
- Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Look at the roof from the ground after strong winds. Debris in the garden is a sign to act on. A drone can show exactly what has moved.
What happens on the day
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes an hour or two for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. If you have questions on the day, just ask. In a London conversion, the way into the loft space is often from a communal landing or the top flat. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming

Drone roof surveys around West Hampstead
Close to the centre of London, a great many houses are Victorian or Edwardian terraces, many of them roofed in Welsh slate. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. In a house like that, shared stacks, party-wall upstands and lead flashings all need looking at as far as they can be seen. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. There are several hotels within about a mile and a half of West Hampstead, and hotels, like offices and blocks of flats, often have flat roofs. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them.
Take an older house close to Presbyterian Church Of St Andrew: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Hotels and guest houses near West Hampstead can’t easily close rooms for a leak, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
