Gutter Survey in Kew
Gutter surveys around Kew, with findings in writing and pictures to back them up. Book a weekday or weekend visit.
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
What we’re asked to look at in Kew
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn and the debris builds up at the outlets. A choked outlet soon means a full, overflowing gutter.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Cracked or loose downpipes
Landlords with a home close to Chiswick station may find that a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.
Questions to ask before you book
- What happens after the report arrives
- What exactly goes into their report
- How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
- Is VAT included in the price?
Gutter survey in Kew: what you get
Owners get in touch after seeing an overflow, finding damp or planning ahead for winter. Landlords and managing agents use the report to plan upkeep and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. Whoever books, we inspect and report in the same way, with photographs and written recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. We survey valley gutters, downpipes and parapet and box gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are gutters that have fallen out of line and joints that drip after rain.
A London butterfly roof slopes down to a central valley gutter that drains to the back of the house. From the street you see only a parapet wall, so blocked outlets and split linings go unnoticed until water comes through a ceiling. For a house in Kew with this kind of roof, the hidden gutter is one of the first things to check.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to.

What this survey cannot tell you
In fairness, a roof survey has limits:
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Eaves gutters
- Valley gutters
- Parapet and box gutters
- Outlets and hoppers
- Fascias and soffits
- Downpipes
How the survey works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes about one to two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so a visit in Kew moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. If other people live in the building, tell us who can let us into the shared parts.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
How to prepare
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.

Kew questions
Can a landlord with a rental near Chiswick station book a roof survey?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details.
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Kew?
It rarely stops a survey, but it’s worth planning. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.
What does the report include?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, finishing with recommendations. The most urgent items are made clear.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No. Our gutter survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.
Do you work in Kew?
Yes. We cover Kew and the rest of Greater London, as part of our work across London and the South East. To book, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding.
How long does a gutter survey take?
Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.
Gutter surveys around Kew
Kew Palace, about 0.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Kew. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. If your home in Kew is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
If you live in an older home near St Paul's Church, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. If you look after a building such as Grove Park Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Why act early in Kew
Damp walls are sometimes blamed on the wrong thing. When rainwater goods are the source, treating the wall alone won’t solve it. Checking the gutters first helps you spend in the right place. London’s older roofs often have bitumen felt underlay or none at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left alone, that means wet timbers and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the roof fault itself.
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.
