Gutter surveys in Merton Park

What happens on the day

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It normally takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so rear slopes are viewed from windows, the loft or, where a flight is allowed, by drone. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, let us know as you book.

  1. You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
  3. We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
  4. Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
  5. A report with photographs and recommendations follows.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Gutter survey in Merton Park

Gutters are usually fixed to fascia boards, so we look at the fascias and soffits too. Long-term overflowing can soften and rot timber boards and stain the soffits below. Older buildings, from before 2000, can have asbestos cement soffits, gutters or downpipes. We do not carry out asbestos testing, but we flag anything that could contain it. We survey downpipes, eaves gutters and valley gutters, and people most often book us about overflowing valley or parapet gutters and cracked or loose downpipes.

A London butterfly roof slopes down to a central valley gutter that drains to the back of the house. Hidden behind the parapet, that gutter can block or split without anyone seeing it. For a house in Merton Park with this kind of roof, the hidden gutter is one of the first things to check.

We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible, and recommendations are put by urgency where it matters.

Tips that help

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
  • Watch for green marks down the brickwork
  • Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
  • Keep climbers away from the eaves

How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. It’s sent to you by email as soon as it’s ready.

Don’t forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.

What we can’t see

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
  • Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
  • What’s hidden inside a downpipe

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Eaves gutters
  • Valley gutters
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Outlets and hoppers

How we price gutter surveys

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. This is what makes a difference:

  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

Helping us price your survey

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • When you need the report by
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • What kind of property and roof it is

Booking is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or email us and give us some details about the property and we’ll point you to the right survey. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

Can I check my roof myself?

It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.

Do you need a gutter survey in Merton Park?

Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter and the weakness shows in a heavy downpour.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Water backing up from a hidden gutter
  • Overflowing eaves gutters
  • Hoppers and outlets full of debris
  • Rotten fascias or stained soffits

If you live near a park like Morden Hall Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

What to check before booking

  • What insurance they carry
  • What the survey will not cover
  • Will the report include photos?
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Merton Park

Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. About 1.4 miles west lies Southside House, a reminder of how long the area around Merton Park has been built on. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.

Shop and office owners around Southside Wandsworth may find that knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies. Take an older house close to St Mary's Church: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Is my home in Merton Park listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Are you insured?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

What’s the best way to book?

To book, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.

Do you use drones?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only if it’s safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Do you check valley and parapet gutters?

Yes, where it’s safe to see them. We use the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it is safe and a drone where it applies.
