About our drone roof survey in Notting Hill
Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. Everything we find goes into a report with photographs. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. We survey fragile roofs, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs, and people most often book us about hidden gutters full of leaves and cracked mortar along the ridge.
Many London roofs are hidden from the pavement: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. That is where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what can’t be reached safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in Notting Hill as anywhere. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Notting Hill: your questions answered
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Notting Hill?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Notting Hill is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
How do I find out if my home in Notting Hill is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is Notting Hill in your area?
Yes. Notting Hill is part of the area we cover, and the service is the same as everywhere else we work.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.
Will you check the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.
How soon will I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll explain what’s needed.
What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. This is what makes a difference:
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Roof area
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.
Getting in touch
If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Dates you’re working to, like exchange
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Anything about access we should know
Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or send us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.
How the survey changes by roof type
Valleys and parapet gutters
When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.
Chimney stacks
The top of a stack is usually out of view. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.
How it works
Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. Mention any building rules, key holders or managing agents as you book.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Note where any stains or damp appear
Booking a survey
If you are buying, it is useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form when you are ready.
Advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Drones, thermal imaging and Notting Hill roofs
The flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea comes within about 1 mile of Notting Hill. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Many homes in inner London are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, frequently with Welsh slate roofs. Many have butterfly roofs draining to a central valley gutter, with parapet walls and gutters hidden behind them. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.
A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Notting Hill means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition. Shop and office owners around Westfield London may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Notting Hill
Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. The drone covers the surface area by area. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
The streets around a church like St John's Notting Hill are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
