How a roof survey works in Slough
Good roofs last decades, but their parts wear at different rates. Natural slate can last 100 years or more, and clay and concrete tiles commonly 50 years or more, yet nails, battens and underlay often fail first. A survey shows which parts of your roof are wearing. Knowing that helps you plan work before it becomes urgent. We survey natural slate, the roof space and lead flashings, and common reasons people get in touch are loose chimney pots and debris building up in roof valleys.
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report, sent to you by email. On timing, it normally takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building.
- You get in touch with the address and anything you’ve noticed.
- We agree a date, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it’s safe.
- Every part of the roof is checked and photographed.
- Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.
How our prices work

Roof surveys across Slough: local notes
Across Slough, a good many older houses still have chimney stacks, used or not, and the lead and mortar around them need watching. Valleys, gutters and fixings follow close behind.
Our area covers London and South East England, including Slough. London and the South East have homes from every era, from period terraces to post-war new towns and new estates.
Slough: If you look after a building like Herschel Grammar School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. With Windsor Castle about 2.1 miles south, the area around Slough has a long history. Older roofs nearby frequently mix original materials with later repairs, and the survey shows where each one is.
Honest limits
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- The condition of the rest of the building (that’s a RICS home survey)
- How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
- Asbestos testing of any kind
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

- Where water is showing inside, if it is

Common roof problems in Slough
The underlay under the coverings matters too. Breathable roofing membranes came into use in the UK in the late 1990s, so older roofs frequently have bitumen felt, and very old ones may have none. Felt that has torn or perished stops doing its job.
Look out for signs like these:
- Blocked, sagging or leaking gutters
- Gaps in the roof where coverings have gone
- Worn or blocked valleys
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters, which helps when budgeting.
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client, photos included.
FAQs for Slough
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days when you book.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Will you check the loft?
Where it is relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
How long will you be at the property?
Allow roughly 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. We’ll give you an idea of timing when booking.
How soon is the report ready?
The Premium Survey has a same-day report, Standard 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Each report includes photos.
Can you check whether my roof contains asbestos?
No. Asbestos was banned in UK construction in 1999, so older buildings may have it. Our report notes any materials that might, and a specialist asbestos surveyor should check them.
Do you give a life expectancy for the roof?
We do not put a figure on it, because so much depends on the fixings, underlay and upkeep. Instead, we set out what’s sound, what’s wearing and what to do first.
