Drone roof surveys across Wokingham: what to expect
Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. Typical surveys look at wind damage high on the roof and lifted or split lead flashings, across tall and steep roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs.
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Drone roof surveys across Wokingham: local notes
Across Wokingham, from Reading, Woodley and Earley outwards, lots of roofs cannot be seen properly from the street. A drone or thermal camera adds a view you can’t get from the ground.
The South East’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around several of its airports, so every drone flight in Wokingham is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Flights that need permission only go ahead once it’s given.
Reading: A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Reading means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do. If you run a business near The Oracle, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from the air or with a thermal camera.
Why roofs fail
After storms, owners want to know what has moved. It is hard to tell from below what has shifted. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
- Vegetation in valleys and gutters
- Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
Roof by roof
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep roofs are risky to walk on. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position, showing slipped, cracked and missing pieces.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. We photograph them closely.
Why get it checked now?
Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. You get photos of every part we can see. You can tackle the urgent items first.
Before booking any surveyor
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Which limits apply to the survey
- How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
What you can safely check yourself
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Wokingham
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.
Your questions about drone roof surveys in Wokingham
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety comes first, so the weather decides. We will not fly in strong wind or a downpour. If the weather turns, we will discuss another date.
What happens after the survey?
You’ll receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Can the drone do thermal imaging?
No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey, and its findings are checked with moisture readings.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
What will the report tell me?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
